Welcome to the Historical Society of Riverton

We hope that you will enjoy browsing our web site at this very special time
in Riverton's history.  Two years ago we celebrated Riverton's 150th birthday and that year marked the 325th  anniversary of the settlement at Burlington by the Quakers from Yorkshire England. Join us in preserving New Jersey's history.

The Historical Society of Riverton (HSR) is a privately funded non-profit corporation, a social and service club, interested in  the preservation of
Riverton history and promoting public education on local history issues to our members and residents of Riverton and the surrounding area. Our neighbors who know Riverton's historic legacy are dedicated to the borough. We at the Historical Society share that spirit with our members and all people who are interested in Riverton.

The Historical Society of Riverton has been in existence for over thirty years.
(founded 1970, incorporated 1978)  Over that time, we have served as advocates to preserve Riverton history, architecture and culture, and our archives have collected many books, letters, maps, family papers, photographs and artifacts pertaining to Riverton history.  We publish a walking tour of Riverton's oldest buildings and we are the issuers of hand-painted historical plaques which you see on many of Riverton's buildings which are over 100 years old.

We have five general membership meetings per year hosted in the easily accessible Riverton School. At each HSR meeting, we sponsor a program about local, state, or national history. The programs are presented by talented speakers who bring slide shows of historical items and places, photos, recordings of historical music, antique maps, crafts, art, etc. The historical programs sponsored at the HSR meetings are paid for from our own treasury, most of which is from the dues of the membership. We also feature state funded programs at selected meetings, and apply to New Jersey state historical and cultural agencies for funding of special projects related to local history.

If you are interested in becoming a member, you can join us by clicking on the attached application form. When you join, your modest annual dues will help to preserve Riverton's unique history and you will receive our newsletter, the Gaslight News. Members receive the Gaslight News four times per year. Each issue includes news of our upcoming meetings with program highlights and informative articles bringing Riverton history to life for young and old.  All who apply are accepted into membership.

Learning about Riverton history is interesting, educational and fun!

Thanks to all who visit our web site.
